Alternate ROOTS
Alternate ROOTS supports the creation and presentation of artwork that is based in community and committed to social and economic justice and the protection of the natural world. Support went toward developing a nationwide network of individuals who provide training in community-based arts practice.

American Civil Liberties Union strives to protect individual rights and liberties in U.S. courts, legislatures and communities. Support was given to continue their efforts to protect First Amendment rights to freedom of expression through litigation and public policy advocacy.

American Library Association
In fulfilling its mission to promote public access to the highest quality library and information services, American Library Association is a vigilant protector of freedom of expression and unfiltered access to information. Appalshop is a multidisciplinary arts and education center producing original films, video, theater, music and spoken-word recordings, radio, photography, multimedia and books in the heart of Appalachia. Committed to striking an appropriate balance in law and public policy between protecting intellectual property and affording public access to it, the Digital Future Coalition is a collaboration of many leading nonprofit educational, scholarly, library and consumer groups, together with major trade associations in the consumer electronics, telecommunications, computer and network access industries.

A community-based visual and performing arts school serving youth and adults, Urban Arts strives to empower artists, activists and students to mobilize and challenge prejudices and oppression.

Esperanza Peace and Justice Center
Esperanza is a community-based center that works for civil rights and social and economic justice for women, people of color, gays and lesbians, and the working class and poor. Support was given to pursue a lawsuit that resulted in the restoration of public funding that had been denied on political grounds.

Feminists for Free Expression is a group of diverse feminists working to preserve each individual’s right and responsibility to read, listen, view and produce materials of her choice, without the intervention of the state “for her own good.”

The Association of Independent Video and Filmmakers supports independent producers and advocates for the media arts field. Support went for educating and mobilizing the independent media community on issues relating to media policy.

National Coalition Against Censorship
The National Coalition Against Censorship is an alliance of 50 national nonprofit organizations, including literary, artistic, religious, educational, professional, labor and civil liberties groups. The National Performance Network is a group of diverse cultural organizers, including artists, working to provide leadership that enables the practice and public experience of performing arts. New Museum of Contemporary Art
The Visible Knowledge Program is a New Museum educational outreach and professional development program for public high schools. Through VKP, artist-instructors are paired with high school teachers to integrate contemporary art into social studies, language arts and science curricula.

Established in 1990 as an alternative to large, commercial publishers, The New Press is a not-for-profit publishing house dedicated to serving the public interest with books of educational, cultural and community value. The New Press publishes about 50 titles per year on contemporary social issues.

New York Foundation for the Arts

New York Lawyers in the Public Interest
Civil Disturbances: Battles for Justice in New York City displayed commemorative signs at sites in New York City to document pivotal legal battles in defense of the rights of the city’s politically and economically disenfranchised. This project was conceived and implemented by REPOhistory.

Out North
Out North presents artists who challenge and change art and community. Support was given for a public education campaign related to funding that was threatened because of the presentation of controversial work.

Project Row Houses
Project Row Houses is dedicated to the creation of artwork that both engages its community in the creative process and celebrates African-American history and culture. Its Houston campus contains 22 shotgun houses, 13 units of low-income housing and three commercial buildings. PRH established and works in cooperation with the Row Houses Community Development Corporation, a culturally based CDC covering a 35-square block area.

Real Art Ways
Real Art Ways built an audio lab and designed an educational program that offers digital audio training workshops for high school students, senior citizens, artists, teachers and other members of the community. Participants produce original projects for web streaming and Internet radio. Projects include citizen journalism, audio art, drama, poetry, music, storytelling, oral history and sound design.

The Art Institute of Chicago
Artists as Citizens in a Democratic Society was created as a collaborative initiative among the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Art Institute. The three schools developed a curriculum to introduce students to art and activism and train them to use their work to further social change in a democratic society.

WBEZ Alliance – This American Life
Produced and hosted by Ira Glass and broadcast by 219 radio stations nationwide, This American Life provides weekly insights about U.S. culture and democracy through documenting everyday lives in stories provided by writers, performers and “people on the street.”

Western States Arts Federation
The New Interpretations of National Parks: The Grand Canyon project developed a model for intercultural alliances, communication methods and planning to serve future partnerships between our National Parks and Native American Tribes.

Challenging Art, a four-part series produced by WBGH (Boston) and aired on public television stations nationwide, investigated the history of controversial art in the United States and the debates over the rights and responsibilities to freedom of expression granted by the First Amendment.
